The Wisconsin Badgers made a major splash on the recruiting trail by securing a commitment from Dellwood native Ryland Rooney, one of the premier 2009-born forwards in the United States.
Rooney had a standout sophomore season at Gentry Academy, posting an eye-popping 69 points (33 goals, 36 assists) in just 26 games. His blend of skill, scoring touch, and playmaking ability made him one of the most dangerous players in Minnesota high school hockey last year. Following his breakout season with Gentry, Rooney joined the Long Island Gulls 15U AAA squad, helping the club capture a New York State Championship. In the title game, he scored the tying goal and later the shootout winner, cementing his reputation as a clutch performer.
Rooney also excelled on the big stage at the High-Performance Boys 16 Spring Festival, where he led all scorers with eight points in just three games.
This season, Rooney will suit up for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL after signing a tender with the club, giving him an opportunity to develop against older competition as he prepares for the next level.
