Duluth native Kaenan Smith has announced his commitment to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota Duluth, bringing one of the area’s top young goaltenders back home to the Bulldogs.
Smith played as a freshman at Duluth Marshall, posting a .934 SV% before moving on to hone his game against elite competition at multiple levels. Over the last few seasons he’s worn a number of jerseys, including the Sioux Falls Power, U.S. NTDP, Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL), and the Janesville Jets (NAHL) , gaining valuable experience and sharpening his skills in a variety of high-level environments. Smith has also made multiple National Camps and was a member of the 2025 US Hlinka Gretzky Cup team.
Known for his size in the crease, quick lateral movement, and composure under pressure, Smith has steadily developed into a goaltender who can handle heavy workloads and thrive. His path to UMD has and will make many stops, but home cooking is coming.
