Backchecking: Minnesota Hockey News & Notes

It was a busy weekend in the Twin Cities with the NAHL Showcase, the Blades Showcase, and the Upper Midwest Elite League all in full swing, while elsewhere, the USHL and WHL heat up their seasons.

Hibbing defenseman Ethan Sundvall even slid up front on Saturday night for TPS in the Elite League and ended up producing four points on three goals and an assist. The senior blueliner now has 12 points in eight games this season; if Hibbing needs help up front, they know where to turn.

Forest Lake’s Malachi McKinnon, a 2007 DOB committed to the University of Maine, is tied for the league lead in points in the USHL with six points in four games for Youngstown.

Rosemount forward Gavin McNeil is pacing the Upper Midwest Elite League in scoring with 24 points in 12 games for APX. He posted 42 points in 27 games last season for the Irish.

Freshman Owen Ryan has looked superb in net for Mpls./St. Paul Magazine, posting a .929 save percentage and stopping 290 of 312 shots so far. For an in-depth read on Ryan, check out HockeyIntel.com.

Another Minnesota goalie making noise is Proctor’s AJ Reyelts, who has a 1.44 GAA and .941 SV% through two games for the Penticton Vees.

Cole Forrest turned heads for SDP’s U16 team at the Blades Showcase, scoring two goals in two games and showing strong play in all three zones. He’s set up for a big season with Maple Grove.

Although the Blades don’t play in the Showcase anymore, they continue to do an excellent job hosting the event, which remains a great opportunity to watch top-tier hockey every year.

Finally, Nolan Fitzhenry has four points in four games for the NTDP U17 team, leading the squad early in the season.
