Owen Ryan Named 2025–26 MN Hockey Life Goalie of the Year

Some seasons announce a player’s arrival. Owen Ryan’s did that, and more.

The freshman goaltender for the St. Thomas Academy Cadets has been voted the 2025–26 MN Hockey Life Goalie of the Year, an honor selected by a voting committee comprised of area scouts and media members. Ryan follows last year’s winner, Leo Gabriel of White Bear Lake Bears, continuing a tradition of recognizing elite goaltending performances across the state.

What makes Ryan’s season even more remarkable is his age. The Cadets netminder is a 2011-born freshman, yet he played with the poise and composure of a veteran. Ryan finished the season with a 16–5–2 record, posting a 1.34 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage, while recording six shutouts. There is heavy pressure on young goaltenders, Ryan consistently delivered calm, technically sound performances.

“Ryan has showcased his abilities, particularly his quick reflexes and leg strength,” noted Hockey Intel in its evaluation. “He reads plays well, stays patient on shooters, and gets his pads flush to the ice in a hurry. His responsible down-low play keeps his five-hole sealed and limits rebound chances.”

Ryan’s impact didn’t go unnoticed among evaluators. Hockey Intel ranked him as the No. 1 rated 2011 prospect in Minnesota, a reflection of both his performance and long-term projection.

“The sky’s the limit for Owen,” one area scout shared. “It’s rare to see a young goaltender with the ability and nerves he does. He looks comfortable in big moments.”

Ryan edged out a talented group of finalists that included Tyler Bacon of Rogers, Bryce Francisco of Hermantown, Grayson Hanggi of Hill-Murray, and Izaak Kalis of Little Falls.

For a freshman goaltender to command the crease the way Ryan did this season speaks to both his natural ability and his composure under pressure. The foundation is already strong, and the trajectory is clear.

We congratulate Owen Ryan on an outstanding season and look forward to watching his continued development in the years ahead.
