RJ Thompson Named 2025–26 MN Hockey Life Rising Star

It didn’t take long for RJ Thompson to prove he belonged.

The 2010-born forward for the Eden Prairie Eagles has been named the 2025–26 MN Hockey Life Rising Star, awarded annually to the top freshman (or younger) in Minnesota High School Hockey. Selected by a voting committee comprised of area scouts and media members, Thompson earned the honor after a breakout season that showcased both immediate impact and long-term projection. He joins impressive company, last year’s Rising Star award went to Maverick McKinnon.

Thompson led Eden Prairie in scoring with 46 points in 25 games, an impressive feat for a freshman adjusting to older, stronger competition. He didn’t just adapt, he thrived. His strong play carried over from the fall, when he tallied 19 points in 21 games in the Upper Midwest Elite League, proving he could produce in high-tempo, development-focused settings.

“He shows a mature understanding of the game for a player his age, particularly in how he gains the offensive zone, supports the puck defensively, and stays engaged away from it,” noted HockeyIntel in its evaluation.

A major driver of Thompson’s success is his skating base. He generates quick acceleration, maintains speed through turns with strong crossover mechanics, and uses subtle weight shifts to deceive defenders, especially in transition. In motion, he processes the game at a high level, identifying seams early, anticipating defenders’ routes, and adjusting in real time. He has a knack for selling one direction, pulling defenders out of position, and snapping into open ice once they commit.

“He doesn’t play like a young player,” one area junior level scout shared. “He plays with pace, poise, and awareness, that’s why he’s dangerous.”

Thompson edged out a talented finalist group that included Donovan Klin of Holy Family Catholic Fire, Owen Ryan of St. Thomas Academy Cadets, Nolan Steele of Dodge County Wildcats, and Brooks Suter of the Edina Hornets.

The Rising Star Award recognizes more than production, it highlights trajectory. Thompson has the skating foundation, intelligence, and offensive creativity to project at the highest levels as he continues to mature. This season was just the beginning.

We congratulate RJ Thompson on a well-earned honor and look forward to following his continued rise in the years ahead.
