1. Warroad (8A) (18-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 OT Bemidji, W 4-1 #14 Thief River Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ #4 East Grand Forks, 2/10 vs Moorhead
The Warriors had a tough week as they narrowly escaped a serious upset bid on the road at Bemidji to start the week when they got back to their old bad habits of a sleepy start and dug themselves a hole but to their credit they were able to escape with come from behind OT win. They then took section foe Thief River Falls and while they controlled the play the Prowlers were able to hang around for a majority of the game before the Warriors put them away late. Now Warroad will face its toughest week of the season as they hit the road and will take to on red hot EGF for the Section 8A #1 seed and then beyond that a tough matchup they will have a game at home with a good Moorhead squad to really test this Warrior team.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #2 Hawks, #4 EGF OT, #5 Maht, #6 Orono, #8 Delano, #14 TRF Key loss: #3 SCC OT
2. Hermantown (7A) (13-7-2)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 #13 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, L 0-1 Moorhead
Upcoming Schedule: 2/9 @ Benilde St Margrets, 2/10 vs Chaska
The Hawks were able to lock up the #1 seed in Section 7A to begin the week when they took down Cloquet/Esko/Carlton in a much tighter game than the final score suggested. The Hawks were able to put away a close 3-1 game in the last 2 minutes by burying a few empty net goals. However, vs Moorhead to end the week the goal scoring issues, which has been the problem all year in bigger games, resurfaced and Hermantown was shutout by the Spuds and dropped their 5th game of the last 8. They still only have one Class A loss to the team directly above them and beat all the teams below them to stay strong at #2. However, this Hawks team appears more vulnerable than ever this year and they have a tough trip to Benilde next week before wrapping up with a struggling Chaska group.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #3 SCC, #4 EGF, #5 Maht, #8 Delano, #11 Hibbing, #12 Proctor OT, #13 CEC Key loss: #1 Warroad
3. St. Cloud Cathedral (5A) (17-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 #17 Northern Lakes, W 4-0 Detroit Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs Totino Grace
The Crusaders took care of business again this week as they were able to dispatch of #17 Northern Lakes and a better than their record Detroit Lakes at home. While both games were low scoring as the opponents are starting to create a formula of shutting down their top line down more which could be concerning. However, Cathedral finding the ability to win low scoring games will come in handy come playoff time so there benefits as well. Now they move on to their next challenge from outside Class A when they take on Totino Grace this week in their last home game of the regular season before the big showdowns with the two main contenders in 5A on the road the following week. .
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #1 Warroad OT, #4 EGF, #6 Orono, #7 NFLD, #10 Alex, #11 CEC, #14 LF & #17 NL x2 Key Losses: #2 Hawks & #8 Delano
4. East Grand Forks (8A) (14-7-1)
Past Week Results: L 3-5 Moorhead, W 8-2 Grand Forks Red River
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs #1 Warroad
The Greenwave continued to play good hockey down the stretch heading into sections as while they lost to Moorhead to begin the week they played the Spuds toe to toe before they fell in the last minutes of the game. They followed that up by whalloping a very good Grand Forks Red River team in one of their more impressive wins of the season. Now they are lined up on their home ice for the biggest game of the year as they get ready to take on their arch rivals #1 Warroad this week with the Section 8A #1 seed hanging in balance in what should be an excellent hockey game.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #5 Maht, #8 Delano, #14 TRF Key Losses: #1 Warroad OT, #2 Hawks, #3 SCC & #11 CEC
5. Mahtomedi (4A) (10-11-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 Two Rivers, L 1-8 St Thomas Academy, W 5-1 Simley
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ East Ridge, 2/8 vs Hastings
The Zephyrs continue to plod along within their schedule picking up two more wins this week and locking up the #1 seed in 4A with the win over Simley. They have drawn the ire of many when it comes to the Class A Rankings because of the sub .500 record. If Mahtomedi played the same schedule as Northfield or Monticello or Proctor, the narrative would be very different, a 20-win season would be happening and no one would have issues with them here. However, the Zephs use the theory that a tough schedule molds them into the team that is always a thorn in the side of favorites in Class A come Semifinal Friday. The formula has worked as they have won 2 of the last 4 A Titles but this team does feel weaker than those versions. Only time will tell if the payoff will be the same as it has normally been but for now they have two more games outside the Class A world this week and a chance to move above .500.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #6 Orono & #11 CEC Key Losses: #1 Warroad OT, #2 Hawks, #4 EGF & #7 Delano OT
6. Orono (2A) (14-7-0)
Past Week Results: L 3-6 Benilde St Margrets, W 5-2 New Prague
Upcoming Schedule: 2/8 vs St. Louis Park, 2/10 vs Chanhassen
The Spartans had another .500 week in their Metro West Conference schedule which will take them into the playoffs. They opened the week by dropping a game on the road to a very good Benilde club which there is no shame in and then rebounded by beating a New Prague team that has been having a nice year to earn the season sweep. Orono is entrenched at the 6 spot of these rankings as they own no wins to any teams above them and they have the head to head win over the teams directly below them and no other bad Class A losses. More Metro West hockey next week as they host St Louis Park and Chanhassen.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #7 NFLD, #8 Delano #9 Monti, #10 Alex, #15 LF Key Losses #1 Warroad, #3 SCC & #5 Maht
7. Northfield (1A) (16-2-2)
Past Week Results: W 7-0 Winona, W 6-1 Mankato West, W 3-0 Rochester Century/John Marshall
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ Lakeville North, 2/8 @ Owatonna, 2/10 vs Rochester Mayo
The Raiders had another dominant week down in the Big Nine Conference as they breezed through three more opponents this week to win their 16th game of the season. The win over Rochester Century/John Marshall was a nic cap on what’s been a dominant run through Southern Minnesota for the Raiders. I will give them a nod up one spot as they will get a chance vs Delano in the final week to prove that right wrong. This week the game vs Lakeville North will be the one of interest as while the Panthers have struggled they and Owatonna should provide good tests to see if Northfield should indeed be considered for even a higher ranking.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #9 Monti & #11 Hibbing Key Losses: #3 SCC & #6 Orono
8. Delano (2A) (12-8-1)
Past Week Results: L 2-7 Holy Family
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs Hutchinson, 2/9 vs Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato
The Tigers got roughed up in their rematch with Holy Family this week as the Fire were playing with a full lineup this time around and were intent on not letting a Class A team sweep them on the season in their own barn. A season series split with the Fire overall is still a good result and looking at some of the key wins Delano has within Class A where their record is (10-4-0) with the losses only coming to the teams ranked above them. They have the best argument to be higher as they own quality Class A wins that none of the teams 5-20 can match and they will get a chance to answer the Northfield debate in the last week of the season. However, this week they will look to add on to the Section 2A resume as they look to get the season sweeps of Hutchinson and LDC.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #3 SCC & #5 Maht OT Key Losses: #1 Warroad, #2 Hawks, #4 EGF & #6 Orono
9. Monticello (5A) (17-2-1)
Past Week Results: T 1-1 Princeton, W 10-0 Northern Edge
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ Buffalo, 2/8 vs Cambridge-Isanti, 2/9 @ #10 Alexandria
The Moose had a little bit of slip up this week as they were only able to tie 5A Princeton to begin their week though they did outshoot the Tigers 53-18 in the game but could not find the back of the net. They then took out their frustrations on Northern Edge and extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games. Now Monticello will finish with five challenging games that will give us a good read on this team heading to 5A playoffs. The matchups vs Buffalo and ranked Alexandria this week should both be very good tests for this Moose squad.
Class A Resume: Key Win: #15 LF Key Losses: #6 Orono & #7 NFLD
10. Alexandria (6A) (11-8-1)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 Detroit Lakes, W 10-1 Sauk Rapids, W 3-2 Duluth Denfeld
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs River Lakes, 2/8 vs St. Cloud Public, 2/9 vs #9 Monticello
The Cards had themselves a very good week as they picked up three wins over Detroit Lakes, Sauk Rapids and Denfeld. Alexandria, much like last year, has really turned it on in the second half of the season and they have now won 7 of their last 8 games currently. They look like the favorites to three peat in 6A and this week they will get a good test as they have three more games with the big one being at the end of the week vs a Monticello team that sits right above them in the rankings.
Class A Resume: Spilt #15 LF (Won 2nd meeting) Key Win: #17 NL Key Losses: #3 SCC & #6 Orono
11. Hibbing/Chisholm (7A) (16-7-0)
Past Week Result: W 11-0 International Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 vs Detroit Lakes
Hibbing stayed hot this week as they won their 6th straight game in row against their old traditional 7A rivals International Falls. The win puts a wrap on their Section 7A resume which has them strongly sitting at the #3 seed. Now they have just one game again this upcoming week vs a Detroit Lakes team that is much better than their record shows as this group of promising youngsters gets themselves prepared for their first high school section run.
Class A Resume: Key wins: #12 Proctor & #14 TRF Key Losses: #2 Hawks, #7 NFLD, #13 CEC & #15 LF
12. Proctor (7A) (16-6-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-4 Pine City, W 2-1 Superior (Wis.)
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs Duluth Marshall, 2/8 vs North Shore
The Rails didn’t have the prettiest of style points this week as they struggled to win against Pine City and Superior but they are now finding ways to win and have won an impressive 7 of their last 8 games. Proctor has been one of the better stories within all of Class A this year and this upcoming week they will have two more winnable games with Duluth Marshall and then a more than likely Section 7A #4 vs #5 seed Quarterfinal Game Preview vs North Shore at the end of the week.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #15 LF & #17 NL Key Losses: #2 Hawks OT, #13 CEC, #12 Hibbing, #24 Breck
13. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (7A) (10-13-0)
Past Week Results: L 5-6 OT Forest Lake, L 1-6 #2 Hermantown, L 2-6 Champlin Park
Upcoming Schedule: 2/8 @ Sartell, 2/10 vs Roseau
The Lumberjacks dropped three straight games this week and they continue to be one of the toughest teams in Class A to rank. They only played 6 games vs A teams all year and went (3-3-0) in those games getting wins over EGF, Hibbing and Proctor. They lost to 3 of the top 5 teams in the state for Class A. They showed this week they can play with the Hawks as don’t let the final score fool you as it was a good tight game throughout before multiple empty goals at the end. They should be the #2 seed in 7A but the record is not pretty and they have blah results vs the middle belly of the big school field. Will put them here for now though the resume in Class A screams Top 10. Two more games this week as the wrap up the regular season vs no class A teams in Sartell and Roseau.
Class A Resume: Key Win: #4 EFG, #11 Hibbing, #12 Proctor Key losses- #2 Hawks, #3 SCC & #5 Maht
14. Thief River Falls (8A) (12-8-1)
Past Week Results: L 1-4 #1 Warroad
Upcoming Schedule: 2/5 @ Roseau, 2/8 vs Red Lake Falls
The Prowlers hosted Class A’s and 8A’s number one team in their only game of the week and while they were able to hang around the re-injury of Braydin Lund, who is expected back for the playoffs, is a killer for this team offensively as they just don’t have the scoring punch in those big games without him to push through in the end and win those tight games they can hang around in. Now they have a very tough matchup with the potent Rams before they have a must win game vs 8A and red hot Red Lake Falls to hold on to the #3 seed for 8A Playoffs this week.
Class A Resume: Key Win: #15 LF Key Losses: #1 Warroad, #4 EGF, #11 Hibbing, #17 NL Key Tie: #3 SCC

Past Week Results: W 4-2 Fergus Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 @ #17 Northern Lakes, 2/8 @ Detroit Lakes, 2/10 vs Cambridge Isanti
The Flyers took care of business against their old 6A rivals Fergus Falls in their only action of the week. It was a good win for Little Falls who just keeps hanging around in the middle part of these A rankings. They will have a busy week ahead as they have three games that should all provide the Flyers with good tests as they get ready for the Section 5A playoffs where it looks like they will have to go through two top 10 teams to get to St Paul this year.
Class A Resume: Spilt #10 Alex Key Win: #11 Hibbing, #16 Luverne, #17 NL Key Losses: #3 SCC, #6 Orono, #9 Monti, #12 Proctor, #14 TRF

Upcoming Schedule: 2/5 @ Windom, 2/9 @ Minnesota River, 2/10 vs Minnesota River
Roll Cards Roll picked up another Section 3A win and Big South Conference this week when they took down one of their rivals in Marshall to earn a sweep on the year. Now they will have a busy two final weeks of the season as they will have two consecutive three game weeks. This upcoming week’s three game slate will serve up a challenge of Luverne having to play a decent Minnesota River team and college series like home and home on Saturday and Friday next week.
Class A Resume: Key Wins: #18 Dodge County, #20 New Ulm X2 Key loss- #15 LF
17. Northern Lakes (6A) (12-6-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-2 #3 St Cloud Cathedral, W 8-0 Morris/Benson
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs #15 Little Falls, 2/8 vs Moose Lake, 2/10 @ Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper
The Lightning had an overall nice week after taking the previous week off. Northern Lakes was able to show growth as they played the high ranked SCC Crusaders very tough the 2nd time around and lost a tough road game by just one goal. They then left no doubt in a blowout to end the week when they took out 6A Morris Benson for a section win. Now they have a busy week ahead with three games and the rematch at home vs Little Falls appearing to be on paper to be the most interesting one.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs New Prague, 2/10 vs St Paul Academy
The Wildcats won their only game of the week which was the 10th in their last 11 games to stay red hot of late. The win over Irondale, a team that beat MPLS who is just outside the A Rankings two days prior, was a nice one for Dodge County as they moved up within these rankings this week. This upcoming week they will now face one of their toughest challenges of the season in a game vs a good New Prague team followed by a visit from St Paul Academy as the Wildcats will look to stay hot.
Class A Resume: Key wins: #19 La Crescent Key Losses: #16 Luverne & #21 SWC

The Lancers just keep continuing to win the games on their schedule as this week they were able to take down two metro teams to end the week by beating South St Paul and St Paul Academy. La Crescent now has won 16 games in a row since their only loss the year to #18 Dodge County back in early December. This week they will take a tour of Wisconsin as they head across the border for three straight games with the game vs a good Wausau West team being one to keep an eye on at the end of the week.
Class A Resume: Key wins: 20 wins in 21 games Key Losses: #18 DC
20. New Ulm (3A) (17-4-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-0 Worthington, W 3-0 Rochester Lourdes, W 9-0 Winona
Upcoming Schedule: 2/6 vs Waseca, 2/10 @ Albert Lea
The Eagles appear to be finally getting fully healthy and they were able to win 3 straight games this week by combined score of 19-0 over Worthington, Lourdes and Windom. New Ulm has now won 8 of their last 9 games and appears to be really clicking as they near the Section 3A playoffs where they should be the #2 seed and have a very realistic chance to get to State. This week they have two more games on the docket that they should win as they face Waseca and Albert Lea as they look to stay very hot.
Class A Resume: Key wins: #21 SWC Key Losses: #16 Luverne x2
Next Five Notable Teams-
• Southwest Christian/Richfield (4A) (13-8-0)- The Stars inconsistent play continued this week as they opened it by dropping a game to Hutchinson but to their credit they did rebound and pick up a Section 4A win over Bloomington Kennedy to stay unbeaten in 4A play and still have the inside track to be the #2 seed. However, they do drop down this week as they are now (3-4-0) in their last 7 games and with a head to head win over MPLS and head to head loss to New Ulm this spot feels about right for now.
• Minneapolis (2A) (9-12-0)- The 612 crew had a (.500) week as they were able to blow out Blake but then dropped a tough one to Irondale to end the week. Overall, they have been playing much better and they are (5-2-0) on their last 7 games and with a head to head loss to SWC above them and no wins vs Top 20 teams but no losses to any Class A teams below them this spot looks like the perfect fit.
• Red Lake Falls (8A) (16-3-1)- The Eagles moved their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games and they picked up the critical head to head win over Park Rapids to strengthen their argument and grip of the #4 seed and home ice for the 8A Quarterfinal game. However, ending the week with a tie to a struggling Greenway team does raise all sorts of red flags. Thai week they have a chance to move into the #3 seed with a game vs their long time rival Thief River Falls to give a better picture where this team truly stands within the Class A picture.
• Providence Academy (2A) (8-14-0)- The Lions had another .500 week where they got absolutely blown out of the water by Gentry and then turned around and blew up Rochester Lourdes at the end of the week. They look now locked into a 3rd round matchup with Breck in the 2A Quarterfinals and what will be one of the better Class A Quarterfinal games in the state. Until then they have games with Bloomington Kennedy and Holy Angels to prepare and prep for the playoffs.
• Breck (2A) (12-9-1)- The Mustangs got an important 2A win over Hutchinson in their only game of the week. The 2A win should lock them into a 4 vs 5 seed rematch with Providence Academy come playoff time. For now Breck they now will get ready for the third time around the match up with the Lions as they have 3 winnable games remaining looking at the rest of their schedule.

The Eagles beat the Winhawks head to head and also have a win over the Wildcats for the 5 seed and Winhawks at 6. Waseca gets the 7 due to no wins against teams above them but no losses to teams below them. Faribault is the 8 seed split with Austin but won the 2nd meeting and the sweep of Red Wing. Southwest Christian/Richfield and Chisago Lakes look like the 2 and 3 seeds give the Stars the edge for a better year and will end up playing more 4A teams. St Paul Highland Park and St Paul Academy play again with the winner to determine the 4 and 5 seed. The South St Paul and Simley rematch will more than likely determine the 6 and 7 seed. For now Red Lake Falls gets the 4 seed for the head to head win over Detroit Lakes and beating Park Rapids the second time in their series split. The Lakers own the head to head over Crookston for the 5 seed but the Pirates can make a mess of things if they sweep RLF. Park Rapids is at the 7 seed due to losing the 2nd matchups with the Pirates and RLF. Lake of the Woods sits at 8 but still have games with the Panthers and Pirates to move up. Bagley/Fosston owns the head to head win for the 9 seed over Kittson County Central but they do play again.
