Class Guy’s A Rankings Week #12 (2/11/2024)

Class A Rankings Week #12 (2/11/2024):

  1. Hermantown (7A) (14-8-2)

Past Week Results: 3-6 Benilde St Margrets, W 7-1 Chaska

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ Grand Rapids

The Hawks had a (.500) week as they went on the road and found themselves in a great battle with a good Red Knights team whose offense was just too much and pulled away in the 3rd period. They follow that up with a rout over a struggling Chaska team to end the week. The Hawks have not been as untouchable due to an offense that is inconsistent. However, they play the best schedule in Class A and have the best resume with wins over 6 of the Top 10 teams below them. Yes, I know many don’t like the Hawks and the record isn’t as great as normal but  they have a great back end and will be tough to beat and they move into #1 with a very tough game vs Grand Rapids to end the regular season.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #2 SCC, #3 EGF, #5 Maht, #7 Delano, #9 CEC, #10 Hibbing, #11 Proctor OT  Key loss: #4 Warroad

2) St. Cloud Cathedral (5A) (18-4-1)

Past Week Results:  W 4-1 Totino Grace

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ #15 Little Falls, 2/15 @ #13 Monticello

The Crusaders won their 10th game in the last 11 they have played as they took down Totino Grace in their only game of the week. Cathedral has been very good all year and when they have Nick Hansen in net they are still unbeaten which includes head to head wins over both EGF and Warroad below them. They move into the #2 spot right below a Hermantown team that beat them.  Now they have their biggest week of the year as they have two road tests vs their main contenders of Section 5A when they travel to Little Falls and Monticello looking to win out and lock up the #1 seed for the Sectional.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #3 EGF, #4 Warroad OT,  #6 Orono, #8 NFLD, #10 Alex, #11 CEC, #14 LF & #17 NL x2  Key Losses: #1 Hawks & #7 Delano

3) East Grand Forks (8A) (15-7-1)

Past Week Results: W 6-3 #4 Warroad

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ #14 Thief River Falls, 2/15 @ Roseau

The Greenwave had the big week within Class A as they were able to knock of the previous #1 Warroad Warriors on their home ice and claim a big Section 8A win. If the Greenwave take care of business this week vs Thief River Falls they should be able to to lock up the #1 seed and while it won’t matter too much as they will still have to travel to Warroad for Sections the win just reinforces to growing belief in this team that they are ready to take the next step and live up to their youth hockey accolades and hype and breakthrough to state in a few weeks. Two good tests to end the regular season with a must when vs TRF and a good last regular season game vs the Rams.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #4 Warroad #5 Maht, #7 Delano, #14 TRF Key Losses:, #2 Hawks, #3 SCC, #4 Warroad OT & #9 CEC

4) Warroad (8A) (18-5-0)

Past Week Results: L 3-6 #3 East Grand Forks, L 4-5 OT Moorhead

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 vs Bemidji, 2/17 vs #17 Northern Lakes

The Warriors faltered this week as they went (0-2-0) and lost the #1 seed most likely in Section 8A. They played a great game with EGF to start the week but they could not match the depth of the Greenwave who pulled away in the 3rd period for an eye opening loss. Warroad then played another good  game vs a solid Spud team and nearly made a great comeback but came up short in overtime. They drop down now in the rankings due to the 2nd loss to EGF by a wider margin than they won earlier in the year and the head to head loss to SCC. All is not lost for Warroad as the section will still go through them on their home ice and this may have been the best thing for them to have happened so they are ready to not falter when it matters most in the sections.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #1 Hawks, #3 EGF OT, #5 Maht OT, #6 Orono, #7 Delano, #14 TRF Key losses: #2 SCC OT & #3 EGF

5) Mahtomedi (4A) (12-11-0)

Past Week Results:  W 4-1 East Ridge, W 5-0 Hastings

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ Cretin Derham Hall, 2/17 vs Woodbury

The Zephyrs just continue to win the games they should and now move over the (.500) mark for the 1st time this year. They took care of business this week vs teams they should be beating in East Ridge and Hastings and again if you look at the schedule they play they don’t have a bad loss on it like the rest below them have vs some bigger schools this year. They sit at #5 again this week and will have yet another tough game vs CDH before wrapping up the year vs Woodbury, a game they will be favored to win before they get ready to defend their Section 4A crown.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #6 Orono & #9 CEC Key Losses: #1 Hawks, #3 EGF, #4 Warroad OT & #7 Delano OT

6) Orono (2A) (15-8-0)

Past Week Results: W 5-2 St. Louis Park, L 1-2 OT Chanhassen

Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 @ Bloomington Jefferson, 2/17 @ Chaska

The Spartans are looking healthy and they had themselves a great week to really show they are ready to make a very big push to get back to State. They started the week by really controlling play vs a St Louis Park crew who beat them a few weeks early to get revenge. Orono then went toe to toe with an excellent Chanhassen team before falling in the last minute of overtime. Those results are promising and this week they will have a chance to end the year with two wins as they will be favored in their last two Metro Conference games vs Jefferson and Chaska.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #7 Delano, #8 NFLD, #12 Alex, #13 Monti & #15 LF Key Losses #2 SCC, #4 Warroad & #5 Maht

7) Delano (2A) (14-8-1)

Past Week Results: W 6-0 Hutchinson, W 7-0 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ Southwest Christian/Richfield, 2/17 vs #8 Northfield

The Tigers had themselves a solid week as they took care of two Section 2A opponents when they swept Hutchinson and LDC. The wins were nice due to it being section games and also it was two wins on the road where this young team has struggled at times. With their resume they have to move back up to #7 as they have two really quality Class A wins. This week will finally solve the musical chair battle between them and Northfield when they meet on the last day of the regular season which should be an excellent Class A Battle and potential state tournament preview.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #2 SCC & #5 Maht OT Key Losses: #1 Hawks, #3 EGF, #4 Warroad & #6 Orono

8) Northfield (1A) (18-3-2)

Past Week Results: W 4-2 Lakeville North, L 2-3 OT Owatonna, W  Rochester Mayo

Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 @ Faribault, 2/17 @ #7 Delano

The Raiders had an up and down week as they were able to start it well picking up a nice win over a struggling Lakeville North team. However, the midweek loss to Owatonna was a game they likely want back in what was a crazy ending. They did wrap up the week taking care of a two winRochester Mayo team. Overall, it’s been a great year for the Raiders and now they have a great matchup to end the year, in what could decide state seeding potentially, when they take on Delano this week. It would be a very nice win to add to their resume and give them great momentum heading into the playoffs.

Class A Resume: Key Wins:#10 Hibbing & #13 Monti Key Losses: #2 SCC & #6 Orono

9) Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (7A) (12-13-0)

Past Week Results: W 3-2 Sartell, W 5-4 OT Roseau

Upcoming Schedule: Section 7A Playoffs

The Lumberjacks put a very strong closing argument as to why they are indeed a top contender in Class A regardless of the overall record to end the regular season. They beat two good teams in Sartell and Roseau and if you add to that a Class A Resume that includes wins over EGF, Hibbing & Proctor one would have to consider them for a Top 10 ranking. The schedule has been awful for them and it doesn’t get any better as now after their best week of the season they have to sit a full week and cool off and they will await their 7A seed which by all accounts will the #2 seed as they prepare for their first ever Class A Playoff run.

Class A Resume: Key Win: #3 EFG, #10 Hibbing, #11 Proctor  Key losses- #1 Hawks, #2 SCC & #5 Maht

10. Hibbing/Chisholm (7A) (17-7-0)

Past Week Result: W 2-1 OT Detroit Lakes

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 vs Rock Ridge

Hibbing continued its torrid late season push as they picked up their 7th straight win when they took down Detroit Lakes in overtime this week. It was a very good win for the youngsters from Hibbing as they came out a bit flat after a week off but were able to push hard in the 3rd period and overtime to get a tight win vs a Laker crew that came in off the heels of their upset over ranked Little Falls. Hibbing’s hot streak breaks them in the Top 10 this week and they are looking very strong and will wrap up the regular season with a good test with Rock Ridge.

    Class A Resume: Key wins: #11 Proctor & #14 TRF Key Losses: #1 Hawks, #8 NFLD, #9 CEC & #15 LF

    11) Proctor (7A) (18-6-0)

Past Week Results: W 2-1 OT Duluth Marshall, W 8-0 North Shore

Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs #17 Northern Lakes

The Rails had themselves another very good week as they picked up two more victories. The first game they needed their elite goaltender to do his thing and then they left no donut vs their potential first round playoff opponent in North Shore to end the week and assure themselves the #4 seed  and home ice for the 7A Quarterfinals. Now they will look to wrap up their fantastic regular season with one more win when they get a rematch with ranked Northern Lakes at home this week.

Class A Resume: Key Wins: #15 LF & #17 NL  Key Losses: #1 Hawks OT, #9 CEC, #10 Hibbing, #25 Breck

    Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ #17 Northern Lakes, 2/15 @ Fergus Falls

The Cards were shocked at home in a bad upset loss to River Lakes to start the week. However, they did recover well to end the week as they avenged one of their worst losses of the year when they took down St Cloud Public in the rematch and then finished the week on a very high note as they shut out Monticello in the regular season home finale of the year. Now they have their biggest week of the season as they hit the road to take on two Section 6A teams that are right behind them as look to stay hot and lock up the #1 seed.

Class A Resume: Spilt #15 LF Key Win: #13 Monti & #17 NL Key Losses: #2 SCC & #6 Orono

    13) Monticello (5A) (18-4-1)

    Past Week Results: L 2-5 Buffalo, W 4-1 Cambridge-Isanti, L 0-3 #12 Alexandria

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 vs Minneapolis, 2/15 vs #2 St Cloud Cathedral

The Moose had their 14 game unbeaten streak snapped this week and while they were able to wrap up a Mississippi 8 Conference Title in the middle of the week they were shut down in the big showdown with Alexandria and they just just outside the Top 10 not this week. All is not lost as they still control their fate for the #1 seed in 5A when they host St Cloud Cathedral to end the regular season but this past week was a rough one for Monticello.

Class A Resume: Key Win: #15 LF Key Losses: #6 Orono, #8 NFLD & #12 Alex

Past Week Results: L 2-5 Roseau, W 9-2 Red Lake Falls

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 vs #3 East Grand Forks, 2/15 @ Bemidji

The Prowlers had a solid (.500) week as they put up a good fight vs the Rams before they were put away in the 3rd period and then they turned around and took care of a red hot Red Lake Falls team that wrapped up the #3 seed in the Section 8A Playoffs. Now they finish the year with a match up vs EGF and chance to play spoiler in the Greenwave’s hope for a  #1 seed before finishing the regular season with a much improved Bemidji club.

    Class A Resume: Key Win: #15 LF Key Losses:,#4 EGF, # 4 Warroad x2  #10 Hibbing & #17 NL Key Tie: #2 SCC

    15) Little Falls (5A) (16-8-0)

    Past Week Results: W 5-0 #17 Northern Lakes, L 2-3 OT Detroit Lakes, W 1-0 Cambridge Isanti

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 vs #2 St Cloud Cathedral

The Flyers started their week on fire as they had some uncharacteristic offense when they blanked a ranked Northern Lakes squad on the road. However, the normal scoring woes continued to the end the week as they were upset by a better than their record Detroit Lakes team before just scraping by Cambridge-Isanti to end the week. Now they get the big rematch with the highly ranked and high powered Crusaders at home this week to see if they can show that they are any closer to the heavy 5A favorite before the real thing begins the following week.

Class A Resume: Spilt #12 Alex Key Wins: #10 Hibbing, #16 Luverne, #17 NL Key Losses: #2 SCC, #6 Orono, #11 Proctor, #13 Monti, #14 TRF, #22 DL

    Upcoming Schedule: 2/12 @ Fairmont, 2/13 @ Waseca, 2/15 @ #19 La Crescent

Roll Cards Roll had a very good week as they were able to all but wrap up the #1 seed in Section 3A. They started the week by taking care of business vs Windom then finished it up with a nice back to back sweep of a decent Minnesota River squad. They will stay busy this week as they have more road games with the #1 seed clincher vs Fairmont followed by a trip to Waseca where they always struggle and then the big showdown with La Crescent to end the year and get ready for sections.

The Lightning had a slow start to their week when they got blanked by Little Falls to be swept on the year. However, they had a great response as they were able to shut out Moose Lake and then went on the road to take out Armstrong/Cooper for a strong finish to the year. Now they have a busy finish with a huge game vs Alexandria at home to start the week for the #1 seed in Section 6A.

    Class A Resume: Key wins: #14 TRF & #21 SWC Key Losses: #3 SCC x2 , #10 Alex, #12 Proctor, #15 LF x2

Past Week Results: T 7-7 OT New Prague, W 6-0 St Paul Academy

Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ Winona, 2/16 vs Minnesota River

The Wildcats had another solid week though they are probably kicking themselves about the New Prague game. Dodge County had a 3 goal lead with 1 minute to go over the Trojans but let them come back and tie it up, with the last 2 being short handed, for a disappointing tie. They did recover well though and took care of St Paul Academy to end the week. Now they have a big Section 1A tilt in Winona with major seeding implications before finishing the year vs Minnesota River.

Class A Resume: Key wins: #18 La Crescent  Key Losses: #16 Luverne & #21 SWC

    19) La Crescent-Hokah (1A) (23-1-0)

Past Week Results: W 10-0 West Salem (Wis.), W 6-2 Onalaska/La Crosse (Wis.), W 4-1 Wausau West (Wis.)

Upcoming Schedule: 2/15 vs #16 Luverne

The Lancers continued to do what they have done all year and that is win hockey games. They were able to go across the border three times and go (3-0-0) by week’s end. In the process they picked up a nice win over their longtime rival Onalaska/La Crosse and ended the week with a good win over a solid Wausau West team. Now the Lancers head into a big final regular season test when they take on Luverne this week in what should be a classic southern hockey clash and prepare both teams for section runs.

Class A Resume: Key wins: 23 wins in 24 games  Key Losses: #18 DC

    10) New Ulm (3A) (19-4-0)

Past Week Results: W 6-5 OT Waseca, W 5-2 Albert Lea

    Upcoming Schedule: 2/13 @ Hopkins, 2/15 @ Litchfield/Dassel Cokato

The Eagles picked up two more wins this week though the Waseca game was tight but they were able to take the game in overtime. They followed that up by snapping a red hot Albert Lea teams long unbeaten streak to continue theri nice season. They now appear to be locked into the #2 seed in 3A and will prepare for section with a good test with Hopkins  before ending the year vs a struggling LDC team.

Class A Resume: Key wins: #21 SWC Key Losses: #16 Luverne x2

    Next Five Notable Teams-

    • Southwest Christian/Richfield (4A) (15-8-0)- The Stars had a good week as they picked up wins in games they should have over LDC and Mound Westonka. Now they end the year with two massive tests to prepare them for their 4A section run when they take on Top 10 Delano and Holy Family to end the regular season this week. The head to head loss to NewUlm keeps them just outside the Top 20 for now but they look to gain the #2 seed in 4A and have a good playoff run.
    • Detroit Lakes (8A) (11-13-1)- The Lakers put a miserable month of January behind them in a very good way this week as they picked up a key sweep of 8A Park rapids to lock up a spot in the 8A 4 vs 5 Quarterfinal Game. They then picked up a nice upset win over Little Falls to show how dangerous they are and took Hibbing to overtime on the road and they appear to be playing well now at the right time as they will sit the last week out and prepare for the Section 8A Playoffs.
    • Chisago Lakes (4A) (11-12-1)- The Wildcats are slowly starting to get healthy as they help be near full strength to make another strong Section 4A run. This past week they showed good signs of that as they were able to tie Hastings and then pick up a nice head to head win over Minneapolis to finish the week. Now they will finish the regular season with a good test with Louie and Providence Academy as they get ready for playoff hockey.
    • Minneapolis (2A) (10-14-0)- The 612 crew continued their up and down play this week as they dropped the opening two games of the week to Two Rivers and Chisago Lakes but then came back to blank Bloomington Kennedy to finish the week on a positive note. They will have a chance to make a statement this week when they have a chance to pull a big upset over Top 15 Monticello.
    • Breck (2A) (13-10-1)- The Mustangs were able to win the IMAC Conference title this week but they fell in a head scratcher to Hopkins to end the week. They will be the #5 or #4 seed in the 2A quarterfinals and overall they have had a nice year. They will finish the regular season with a game with Rochester Lourdes and look to gain some momentum heading into playoffs.

Dodge County & La Crescent both only have one section loss and Wildcats may get the edge due to the head to head win between the two but Lancers played more section teams. As noted, Seeds 4-5-6 are gonna be interesting but will give Albert Lea the edge still as they  own the head to head win over Rochester Lourdes and won the critical 2nd meeting of the split with Winona. The Eagles beat the Winhawks head to head and also have a win over the Wildcats for the 5 seed and Winhawks at 6. Waseca is solid at 7 due to no wins against teams above them but no losses to teams below them. Faribault is the 8 seed split with Austin but won the 2nd meeting and the sweep of Red Wing. Minneapolis is a lock at the 3 seed as they have only lost to the Spartan & Tigers in 2A. Providence gets the nod over Breck due to winning the important 2nd game of their season split for the 4 vs 5 matchup but it could be flipped but it will be those two playing in that game. Mound Westonka gets the 6 seed over Hutchinson winning the 2nd game of the season series where they tied earlier this year. Litchfield Dassel-Cokato is the 8 seed as they are winless within the section but the winner of the Dragons and Tiger rematch will decide the 7 and 8 seed debate.

    Section 3A Projected Seeding (2/11/24)

    1- Luverne (20-2-0)

    2- New Ulm (19-4-0)

    3- Mankato East (11-11-2)

Marshall gets the nod over Minnesota River at the 5 seed due to winning the 2nd game of the series split. Worthington holds the number 7 seed over Windom for now due to their blowout of the Eagles but they will meet again. Fairmont gets the 9 seed over Redwood Valley due to having more section wins overall on the year.

    Section 4A Projected Seeding (2/11/24)

    1- Mahtomedi (12-11-0)

    2- Southwest Christian/Richfield (15-8-0)

    7- Simley (3-18-2)

    8- Bloomington Kennedy (4-18-0)

Section 4A Seeding Outlook- Mahtomedi right now would appear to be the #1 seed in limited Section 4A action as they are unbeaten. Southwest Christian/Richfield and Chisago Lakes look like the 2 and 3 seeds and will give the Stars the edge for a better year and will end up playing more 4A teams. St Paul Highland Park should be the 4 seed with a sweep of St Paul Academy. SPA looks like the favorite for the 5 seed with a head to head win over South St Paul and winning the 2nd game over Simley. SSP beat and tied the Spartans to get the nod at the 6 seed. Bloomington Kennedy has yet to win a section game and seems destined for an 8 seed.

    Section 5A Seeding Projection (2/1124)

    2- Monticello (18-4-1)

    6- Pine City (11-13-0)

    7- Sauk Rapids (9-13-3)

    8- Becker/Big Lake (14-9-0)

    9- Mora/Milaca (14-9-1)

Section 5A Seeding Outlook- St Cloud Cathedral looks strong for the #1 seed but big games with the Flyers and Moose loom this week. Monticello is the #2 seed with the tie with Tigers the second time around but if they beat SCC in the last game of the season will be #1. Little Falls only has losses to SCC and the Moose to be the 3 seed. River Lakes is the 4 seed with a tie with Princeton and head to head wins over both Pine City and Sauk Rapids and the 2nd win of a split with Becker Big Lake. It is anyone’s guess on seed 5-6-7-8 as they all own wins over the other. Mora/Milaca is the 9 seed as they are winless in the section.

    Section 6A Seeding Projection (2/11/24)

    1- Alexandria (13-9-1)

    8- Breckenridge/Wahpeton (5-17-0)

Section 6A Seeding Outlook- The winner of the 2nd meeting between Alexandria and Northern Lakes should determine the #1 and #2 seed. Fergus Falls is the #3 seed and after that it will be interesting right now  Morris Benson looks good for the 4 seed winning 2 of 3 games over the Prairie Centre. The Northstars get the 5 due to winning the important 2nd games splits with Willmar & Wadena Deer Creek. The Wolverines won the 2nd game of the series split with Breckenridge/Wahpeton for the 7 seed over the Blades who seem destined for the 8 seed.

    Section 7A Projected Seedings (2/11/24)

    9- Moose Lake (6-18-0)

Section 7A Seeding Outlook- Hermantown is a lock for the 1 seed with no 7A losses. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton should be the #2 seed as they only have one section loss to the Hawks and no one else and beat the Blue Jackets and Rails head to head. Hibbing gets the #3 seed due to their head to head win over Proctor and both only having losses to the Hawks and CEC above them. North Shore is the #5 seed for now but have games to play.Greenway won the head to head over Ely and the second game over International Falls for the 6 seed. The Timberwolves get the 7 seed  due to their 7A sweep of the Broncos. Moose Lake is the 9 seed with no section wins.

    1- East Grand Forks (15-7-1)

    2- Warroad (18-5-0)

    3- Thief River Falls (13-9-1)

    4- Red Lake Falls (18-4-1)

    9- Bagley/Fosston (6-16-0)

    10- Kittson County Central (2-22-0)

Section 8A Seeding Outlook-  East Grand Forks is now the presumed #1 seed with the big 2nd win of the split with Warroad. Thief River Falls has not beat the Warriors or EGF but no losses to any other teams in 8A for the #3 seed. After that it’s fuzzy but clearing up. For now Red Lake Falls gets the 4 seed for the head to head win over Detroit Lakes and beating Park Rapids the second time in their series split. The Lakers own the head to head over Crookston for the 5 seed but the Pirates can make a mess of things if they sweep RLF. Park Rapids is at the 7 seed due to losing the 2nd matchups with the Pirates and RLF. Lake of the Woods sits at 8 but still has the sweep of Bagley/Fosston who owns the head to head win for the 9 seed over Kittson County Central but they do play again.
