For the second year in a row there were nine Minnesota products taken in the WHL U.S. Priority Draft. Liam Hamre was the first Minnesotan taken, picked by Prince Albert with the fifth overall pick. This is the third year the WHL has had a separate draft for American born players. The U.S. Priority portion of the draft is 2 rounds, totaling 44 picks. Minnesota had 6 players selected in 2021 and of course 9 players last year.
Some of the top 2008 Minnesotans were not selected, including Shattuck’s Mikey Berchild, as one of the main concerns/strategies of this draft is being able to have your selected individual play for your franchise. California Had the most of any state with 10 players selected.
Griffin Sturm of St. Cloud was a selected by Portland in the Eighth Round of the WHL Prospects portion of the draft, which was held a day after the U.S. Priority Draft.
