St. Thomas Transfer Portal Additions

The excitement is starting to build as the beginning of the Division I Era at St. Thomas is just over six weeks away. While the schedule has been released and the coaching staff is in place (we think), it is time to look at the players that will be part of this St. Thomas squad. The following are the 8 players that the Tommies have picked up via the NCAA transfer portal. In the coming days we will look at the freshman class and returning players that will have an impact on the 2021-22 University of St. Thomas Men’s Hockey team.

Peter Thome, Senior Goalie

-Transferred from the University of North Dakota 

-Thome Should be the starting netminder for the Tommies this season after primarily being a backup at North Dakota for 4 years

-Thome has had success at the D1 level as he has displayed stretches of being dominate when given the chance. In 2019-20 Thome posted a 7-1-2 with a 1.37 GAA and .935 SV% 

-Thome, who did not start playing hockey until the age of 12, was a 6th-round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2016  

-NCAA D1 Experience: 42 games (19-14-5) with a 2.24 GAA and .903 SV% 

Ethan Gauer, Sophomore Defenseman

-Transferred from Bemidji State University 

-Gauer Was committed to Alaska-Anchorage before the program put on the brakes.  

-Gauer was part of Farmington High School’s 2016 State Tournament team and is a two-year veteran of the NAHL (Bismarck).

Nolan Sawchuk, Senior Defenseman

-Sawchuk was a 4-year letter winner at Burnsville and like Gauer, played in the 2016 Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament

– Played juniors in Minot of the NAHL where he accumulated 62 points in 113 games while being an astounding +43 

 -NHL Hall of Fame goalie, Terry Sawchuk is Nolan’s great uncle

John Schuldt, Senior Defenseman

-Won USHL Clark Cup Champion with Fargo in 2018 

-Brother Jimmy was a 3-year captain at St. Cloud and has played in the NHL with Vegas 

-NCAA D1 Experience: 58 games, 2g, 6a, 8 points 

Trevor Zins, Junior Defenseman

-Transferred from St. Cloud University 

-Another well-traveled junior player as Zins is also a veteran of the NAHL, BCHL, and the USHL 

-Was at St. Cloud for two seasons but did not see any game action 

-His 46 points in 2018-19 was 4th most in the BCHL for defensemen

Matt Jennings, Senior Center
