Sam Spehar Joins Portland Winterhawks in WHL Move

The Portland Winterhawks have landed another major addition to their roster with the acquisition of Minnesota native Sam Spehar

Spehar’s WHL rights were acquired from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for 2008-born prospect Landon Amrhein. Originally drafted 30th overall by Calgary in the 2022 WHL U.S. Priority Draft, Spehar had been developing his game in the USHL.

This past season with Sioux Falls, Spehar put up 14 goals and 18 assists in 52 games, an impressive campaign for the 17-year-old winger. The move also reunites him with his younger brother, Finn Spehar, who signed a WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement with the Winterhawks earlier this spring.

Sam Spehar is currently committed to the University of Denver for college hockey.

With two Spehars now in the system, Portland not only adds skill and depth, but also creates a compelling family storyline for fans to follow next season.
