After a somewhat unconventional season, Cal Conway of Stillwater has stayed mentally tough, leading the Ponies to the State Tournament and now to the State Championship.

Despite missing a portion of the season due to eligibility issues, Conway has returned to the crease without missing a beat, quickly showing why he’s considered one of the top goalies in his age group. Conway played in only six regular-season games for Stillwater this season, but his play after reinstatement has reinforced his reputation as a mentally strong and composed netminder. The ability to stay sharp and maintain focus after sitting idle for the extended period speaks volumes about Conway’s resilience and mental fortitude.

In high-pressure situations, Conway has repeatedly demonstrated poise. Whether facing a flurry of shots or dealing with high-stakes moments, he remains calm and confident, sticking to his game and shutting down opposing shooters.

His technical game is top-notch as Conway keeps his gaps tight and shows excellent rebound control, making it difficult for opponents to generate second-chance opportunities. His use of the RVH (Reverse-Vertical-Horizontal) is exceptional as he seals the post with the toe box of the pad (not his skate) and keeps his pad flush to the ice and his chest up. His puck-tracking skills are exceptional, as he maintains focus and has a natural ability to read the play, anticipating the shooters next move. With that being said he stays true to the shooter, squaring up and not overcommitting.

Conway’s reflexes are quick, and he’s always stable on his skates, making himself tough to beat. He showcased his skill in the Semi-Finals against St. Thomas, where he turned aside all 36 shots faced, helping the Ponies to a hard-fought victory despite being outshot 36-22.

His poise under pressure and ability to play a composed, steady game has solidified his status as one of the most reliable goalies in his class. Conway’s back in form, and he’s showing exactly why he’s considered a top talent.
