Cooper Simpson Wins MN Hockey Life Player of the Year

Shakopee’s Cooper Simpson has been named the 2024-2025 MN Hockey Life High School Hockey Player of the Year. Simpson had an outstanding season, racking up 77 points in just 28 games, including 47 goals— the most in Minnesota High School Hockey.

A North Dakota commit, Simpson played a key role in Shakopee’s historic season, leading the Sabers to their first-ever Class AA State Tournament appearance. Over his four seasons with Shakopee, Simpson tallied an impressive 233 points in 105 games, with 137 goals, making him the top scorer in Minnesota High School Hockey over the last four years.

What sets Simpson apart is his ability to create scoring opportunities in tight spaces. He’s an elite sniper who gets his shot off quickly, often using deception to outsmart defenders and goalies. His toe-drag pullback move is executed with such speed that even if a defender anticipates it, it’s often too late to react.

Simpson’s talent has not gone unnoticed on the national stage:

  • Ranked 67th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2025 NHL Draft
  • Participated in National 15, 16, and 17 Camps
  • Member of the U.S. Hlinka Gretzky Cup team
  • Tender Agreement with Tr-City in April, 2023
  • 2025 Mr. Hockey Finalist

The MN Hockey Life Player of the Year award was determined by a voting committee made up of area scouts and media members. Last year’s winner of Gavin Uhlenkamp of Chanhassen.
