Centennial Stuns White Bear Lake in a 3-2 Upset, More to Come?

As sections approach, Centennial’s 3-2 victory over White Bear Lake raises an intriguing question: Could this be a preview of what’s to come?

Joey Hemr stole the spotlight, netting a hat-trick, including the game-winning short-handed goal early in the third period while goaltender Easton Cody stood tall with 37 saves. The performance showcased Centennial’s raw talent and ability to put together a solid 51 minutes. The win also highlighted their inexperience, with some breakdowns defensively while being outshot by a wide margin.

Hemr, who has had a relatively quiet season, reminded every one of his high-end skill. His background with the Minnesota Blades and standout performances at High Performance events suggest he’s capable of delivering on the big stage. Beyond Hemr, Centennial boasts an arsenal of young offensive threats. Nick Carls possesses elite puck-handling skills and has the ability to take over a game. Leading scorer Gavin Cunningham, Kaden Johnson and senior Cooper Daikawa, give Centennial multiple scoring options.

In net, Cody has already proven himself as one of the state’s top goaltenders. His ability to come up big in crucial moments was on full display last season in the Section 5 final against Maple Grove, where he made 28 saves to secure a trip to state.

With a blend of emerging talent and a goaltender who can steal games, Centennial has the potential to pull an outset as they showed. The question remains: Will their youth rise to the occasion and lead them back to the state tournament?
