The pipeline of Minnesota defensemen advancing to the next level continues to grow. Wayzata native Will Subject has announced his commitment to play NCAA hockey for the Maryville Saints men’s ice hockey.
The 2005-born defenseman spent the 2025–26 season with the Nanaimo Clippers, appearing in 41 games and recording 10 points from the blue line. While the raw point totals tell only part of the story, Subject’s value comes from his steady presence on the back end. He plays a composed, detail-oriented game and is the type of defenseman coaches trust in important situations.
Subject developed his game in the Wayzata Trojans program, one of Minnesota’s most respected hockey associations, before moving on to the Vancouver Giants, where he spent three seasons in the WHL continuing to refine his game against high-level competition.
Offensively, Subject contributes through smart puck movement and a willingness to activate when lanes open. His shot from the point carries good velocity, and he shows strong awareness distributing pucks along the blue line to maintain offensive-zone possession.
Maryville continues to add players who bring structure, maturity, and strong habits to their lineup, and Subject fits that mold. His development path through Minnesota hockey and major junior should position him well as he prepares to transition to the NCAA level.
