Eight wins in their first ten games only tells part of the story in Warroad. The Warriors are a team that wears opponents down through layers, detail, and buy-in. Even with a significant portion of the goal scoring coming from two players, the Warriors continue to show balance and depth that extends throughout the lineup, a recipe for success came section time.
Warroad has won seven straight games, and are 8-2 with their only losses coming to strong opponents in Moorhead, the No. 1 team in Class AA…..and Delano, #3 in Class A. Along the way they’ve earned quality wins over Mahtomedi, Grand Rapids, Rock Ridge, and East Grand Forks. The Warriors have been playing balanced hockey, with every line contributing and each player buying into a structured, responsible approach.
Special teams have been a major driver of success. The power play is operating at an efficient 25.7%, but the penalty kill has been exceptional, allowing just two goals on 41 opportunities for a 95.1% success rate. Warroad has even been dangerous while shorthanded, scoring 4 goals and coming out +2 on the PK this season.
junior forward Gavin Andersen leads the team with 10 goals and 19 points, quickly establishing himself as one of the top players in Minnesota High School Hockey. He plays with pace, is elusive in traffic, and has been the spark up front for the Warriors. Senior Mooney Shaugabay has been equally impressive, delivering in all three zones. His tight defensive play, ability to force turnovers, and dynamic transition game make him a major driver of possession. He also has 3 shorthanded goals, further highlighting his value on special teams.
On the blue line, the Hontvet brothers anchor a great defensive group. Warroad can comfortably roll three pairs, each of which plays with edge, structure, and discipline. They limit quality scoring chances, finish checks, and provide very little time and space for opposing forwards. Freshman Ayven Hontvet has been a revelation, playing with the poise of a veteran while showing shutdown ability and the instincts to transition pucks up ice. He sits fourth on the team with 12 points.
Warroad is also utilizing another freshman in their top six: Rodrick Jackson. He plays an intelligent, crafty game, reading pressure well and executing plays in stride. Jackson has 10 points through 10 games and continues to look more confident each night.
It’s not just the top lines making noise. The third line has been a consistent asset, winning battles, getting pucks deep, and generating meaningful offensive-zone time. The lineup has been a bit fluid early, with players stepping into different roles as needed, but the constant is a full-team effort fueled by work ethic and reliability.
In goal, Warroad has been rock-solid. Their starter Finn Hanson has posted a 1.81 GAA and .928 save percentage, showing strong flexibility, quickness, and the mental steadiness needed to close games. Behind him, Patrick Kennedy has proven capable as well, stopping 22 of 23 shots in his lone start and giving the Warriors confidence whenever he’s called upon.
Many may still look at Warroad and assume they are a top-heavy team. This couldn’t be further from the truth. They are deep, disciplined, and built to win games in multiple ways. With veteran leadership, impact underclassmen, and a strong team identity, the Warriors are shaping up to be a serious contender once again in Class A.
