The Academy of Holy Angels has been a team on the brink the past few seasons, and this could finally be the year they turn the corner. After falling to Edina in last season’s Section 6AA semifinals, the Stars return with experience, depth, and plenty of offensive firepower. The road to St. Paul won’t be easy, Section 6AA once again stands as one of the state’s toughest, with Rogers, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Wayzata, and Edina all in the mix.
Strength of schedule has often been a point of discussion when it comes to Holy Angels’ state-ranking position. That narrative may shift this season, as the Stars open their campaign against St. Thomas Academy on November 25th and face a more demanding schedule overall compared to what it was just a couple years ago. While there are still a few lighter matchups on the docket, this year’s slate should provide the type of tests needed to prepare for postseason play.

Eight of the team’s top nine scorers return, the lone departure being last year’s state points leader, Henry Lechner. Even with that loss, the offense should be dynamic. Cole Cheeseman and Lincoln Ayers Assad look poised to lead the charge up front. Both are talented, creative players capable of pushing the pace and making high-end plays. Each has 35-goal potential, and they headline a deep group of forwards that will serve as the team’s strength this season.
On the blue line, the Stars boast a reliable and improving defensive corps. Few players in the state have shown as much growth as Teddy Lechner, who earned a call to the NTDP and now anchors the back end with size, skill, and disruptiveness. Avi Kasargod brings agility and puck-moving ability, while Gabe Perron adds valuable experience and offensive punch, his 135 points over the past three seasons are the most by any defenseman playing Minnesota High School Hockey during that span.
Between the pipes, expect competition as the team looks to solidify the goaltending position after losing Luke Marsalek to graduation,….. a storyline to watch as the season unfolds.
Overall, Holy Angels has the star power, balance, and depth to contend in 2025–26. If the Stars can peak at the right time and tighten up defensively down the stretch, they have the tools to make a serious push for St. Paul. Section 6AA will be a battle, and the Stars are right in the thick of it.
