On a night when Moorhead didn’t have their ‘A’ game, captain Mason Kraft took charge, leading his team to a thrilling 7-4 comeback win over Lakeville South with a four-goal performance.
Kraft left everything on the ice, showcasing his relentless compete level, exceptional puck control, and impressive hockey IQ to prevent an upset and keep the Spuds’ tournament hopes alive.
He got things started early, scoring the first goal for Moorhead after a fortunate carom off the dasher that landed perfectly on his stick. Without hesitation, Kraft quickly transitioned from forehand to backhand and lifted the puck into the net, cutting Lakeville’s lead to 2-1. Later in the first period, Kraft forced a turnover in the offensive zone and instantly fed a perfect pass to Zac Zimmerman in the slot to make it 3-2, keeping Moorhead within striking distance.
Despite Lakeville South continuing to apply pressure and take a 4-2 lead midway through the second period, Kraft never panicked. Instead, he did what he does best—he played his game and delivered when his team needed him most. With Moorhead down by two, Kraft fired a laser beam of a shot into the upper corner to cut the deficit to 4-3, shifting the momentum in Moorhead’s favor.
The Spuds, energized by their captain’s clutch play, completed the comeback and secured a 7-4 victory. Kraft added an insurance goal and sealed the win with an empty-netter, capping off an unforgettable performance.
Kraft’s four goals and one assist were a testament to why he’s a finalist for the prestigious Mr. Hockey Award. In addition to his five-point night, he fired 8 shots on goal and finished with a +3 rating.
This remarkable performance on the big stage served as a preview of what Minnesota State fans can expect from Kraft in the future—a highly driven player with an elite scoring touch.
