White Bear Lake’s Leo Gabriel has been voted the MN Hockey Life Goalie of the Year for the 2024-25 season. The voting committee for the award was comprised of area scouts and media members. Last year’s winner was Kam Hendrickson of Chanhassen.
Leo had a sensational season, posting a 1.73 GAA and a .928 SV%, while compiling a 14-8-3 record with 5 shutouts. Over his 3-year high school career, Leo went 49-23-4 with 18 shutouts. He led the Bears to the 2024 State High School Tournament and served as team captain this season.
Leo has quick reflexes and excellent lateral movement. He stays square to shooters, cuts down angles, and tracks the puck well. His ability to cover gaps and anticipate plays sets him apart, allowing him to make improbable saves. Leo’s awareness and focus on the ice are exceptional, making him a reliable and composed presence between the pipes.
Leo has also had success outside of high school hockey:
- US National Camp Select 15
- Two-time Midwest Elite League selection
- World Youth Champion and Goalie of the Tournament in Philadelphia
The four other finalists for the award were Charlie Stenehjem of Moorhead, Cody Niesen of St. Thomas Academy, Fuzz Aafedt of Blake, and Carter Casey of Grand Rapids.
Congrats to Leo, and we wish him luck as his hockey journey continues.
