Freshman forward Cole Swanson has made an impact for Hibbing this season, emerging as the team’s second-leading scorer with an impressive 44 points in just 25 games. His on-ice awareness, skating ability, and physicality have quickly made him a standout, assimilating nicely to the high school level after a great showing in bantams.
Cole has shown he’s a gamer, demonstrating a high-compete level. He keeps his feet moving and head-up, constantly surveying the ice sheet for openings. Swanson has shown good edge work and balance, thriving in transition. His ability to open his hips and shift into the 10-2 skating position while making powerful C-cuts with his inside edges allows him to be a prime passing option off the puck but also adds a layer of deception when he carries it.
Swanson’s quick hands and sharp stickhandling skills make him a constant threat in 1v1 situations, where he gains control and creates scoring chances. It’s not just finesse that defines Cole’s game as he brings a physical edge as well. In the Section 7A Semi-Final, Swanson delivered a highlight-reel body check that sent a Hermantown player flying into the Hibbing bench, showcasing his toughness and competitive fire. While he doesn’t go out and make it a point to play the body, he does show how effective he can be by rolling off opponents and absorbing hits while in the dirty areas of the ice. This part of his game has been a direct correlation of his success.
Cole has scored his 16 goals in many different fashions this season. He does a great job with his release, often waiting for traffic out front before smoking a low wrister/snap. His hands in tight have been valuable to pick up rebounds or poke at a loose puck. His breakout/scoring is no surprise to those familiar with his game or the Hibbing faithful. Last year, Swanson put up a staggering 130 points at the Bantam A level and led the Bantam Elite League in goals with 21 last fall.
With his combination of skill and smarts, Cole Swanson is not just a key player for Hibbing but name to watch for years to come.
