Former Benilde St. Margaret’s defenseman and Wayzata Hockey Association product Mace’o Phillips Committed to the Gophers on Wednesday. Phillips is considered one of the top 2007 DOB’s in the country as he possesses prototypical size and skill. Phillips was selected to the National Team Development Program in April and will compete for USA for the next two seasons.
Phillips scored 7 goals and added 15 assists in 27 games for the Red Knights last season, showing a lot of progression and maturity over the course of the year. Phillips displayed great strength on his skates and a high compete level while showing flashes of brilliance. Phillips has been tabbed by many as a future 1st round NHL pick.
The commitment from Phillips was the first the University of Minnesota has received since Axel Begley in late May and is the first 2007 prospect to commit to the Gophers.
