For the first time in the modern era the Tommies faced off against the Minnesota Gophers at the historic Doug Woog Arena on Sunday afternoon in front of a packed house (approximately 2300). The energy in the barn was reminiscent of the Phil Housley days at Wakota Arena (renamed in 2015 to Doug Woog) The Gophers won the expedition tilt 5-2, and promises to be the first of many matchups between the two squads.
The contest against the Gophers was the first game with Mathew Jennings wearing the C on his sweater for the Tommies. The Buford, Georgia native played three seasons at Ohio State before transferring to St. Thomas for his senior season. Jennings has 2 goals and 8 assists this season.
Although the goal won’t be in the books, Andrew Kangas scored his first D1 goal against the Gophers. Kangas collected the puck in the slot and wristed a shot past the Gopher goaltender. The tally by Alex came just 11 seconds in the game.
The Tommies 1-19 will take on Bowling Green 9-8-3 on Friday and Saturday night at St. Thomas Arena. The Tommies lost to Bowling Green 4-2 and 3-0 in early November.
